I love Humans of New York. I check the HONY IG page daily. I obsessively read the stories, stare at the pictures, and dissect every little thing I see. It’s fascinating to me. As someone who loves studying people, and considers herself a professional people watcher, I appreciate the fact that Brandon Stanton (the creator of HONY) spends his life telling the stories of people who are often overlooked by society. Now let’s be clear, I loved him before-but after reading his open letter to Donald Dump, I absolutely adore him.
Humans of New York is a compelling social project that captures photos of every day people in New York. These photos tell a story. This particular story is inspiring. Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York captured this image of Brooklyn teen Vidal Chastanet.
You can’t help but fall in love with the caption:
“Who’s influenced you the most in your life?”
“My principal, Ms. Lopez.”
“How has she influenced you?”
“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”
*Cries ALL the tears*
Here’s Ms. Lopez
Three days later, Brandon visited Ms. Lopez at Mott Hall Bridges Academy. He told her that the Humans of New York family could help the school and the students. From there, they set up an online fund, and have raised well over a million dollars. With this money, the students will take field trips to Harvard throughout the school year. Ms. Lopez wants to show her students the possibilities that exist outside of Brooklyn.
This is amazing! We need more teachers/principals like this. This is the TRUE meaning of educating the youth. I’m rooting for them! Congratulations Mott Hall Bridges Academy!
