There are many things we need in this world-
Love, clean air, a President who reads above a third grade level…But what we absolutely DON’T need today, tomorrow, or next week, is a Baby Boy sequel. On Monday, however, much to my chagrin, Tyrese announced via Instagram that a sequel was most certainly on the way. Not sure what we did to deserve this.
It seems that we’ve come to a point in the entertainment industry where remakes, reboots and sequels reign supreme, and original ideas have taken a backseat. I mean, for God’s sake, who asked for a Full House reboot, anyway?! Nobody. That’s who.
Nor did we ask for a Rush Hour miniseries or a Part 36 of the Fast & the Furious. At some point, it would behoove us to let sleeping dogs lie. Baby Boy is a classic. Maybe not by the Academy’s standards, but the Blacks?? We give it a solid 5 1/2 stars. Everything from Jody’s childlike behavior, to Yvette’s round the way girl flavor, reminded us of people we knew, or people we wish we knew, if even just for a little while.
The brainchild of none other than hood classic extraordinaire, John Singleton, Baby Boy, a film made over 15 years ago, continues to give us something to talk about. Who could forget Yvette and Jody’s love of tacos (amongst other things)?
It’s kinda like when Michael Jordan came back after retirement wearing the 4-5 on his jersey. Things just weren’t quite the same. We wanted them to be, but they just…weren’t. As a huge fan of Baby Boy, despite how many times BET runs it into the ground on any given weekend, I have to say that a sequel would only ruin its legacy. We’ve worked too hard building memories and good feelings based on the original film, and I’ll be damned if I let a sequel stand in our way! What do you think? Are you down for sequels, reboots, and remakes, or should we just let good things revel in their goodness?
