I love Mary J Blige. She is the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul,” the title bestowed upon her by Sean “Puffy” “Puff” “Diddy” “P. Diddy” Combs, himself. Growing up in the mean streets of Yonkers, New York, Mary has always had a little edge-but that’s why we love her. She’s genuine. She’s relatable. And she makes good music.
For the past 12 years, our girl Mary has been living in marital bliss with her husband and manager, Mr. Martin “Kendu” Isaacs. (For future reference ladies, never trust a man who has a middle name surrounded in quotation marks) We were all so happy for MJB. She’d finally escaped the chokehold of K-Ci “Oooh Yea” Hailey, and things were looking up. In her own words, she just wanted to “Be Happy.”
That was good news and everything, except for when Mary was in the depths of a terrible relationship surrounded by a crazy man, alcohol, drugs, and sadness, she made some BOMB ass music.
Real Love, Love No Limit, I Don’t Want To Do Anything, Reminisce, You Remind Me, Be Happy, Goin’ Down-all major HITS. These songs, many of them, were a part of the soundtrack that helped to shape, mold us, and set the tone in the 90’s.
The pain, the sad eyes, the REALNESS-these are things we appreciated about Mary, even though we later found out that she actually wasn’t happy at all. This wasn’t just entertainment. The public got a glimpse of what was going on behind closed doors during the infamous performance from she and K-Ci on the MTV Unplugged Stage. The couple was visibly unhinged.
Fast forward to Mary’s happy days, free of K-Ci, and happily married to Mr. Isaacs. We were hit with Stay Down, Stronger, No More Drama, Each Tear, We Ride, Come to Me, and so on and so forth. Now I’m a Mary fan to the day I die. I love her from the top of her blonde crown to the bottom of her non-dancing feet.
But none of these new “happy” songs can compare to Ol’ trifling, “while all the time that I was lovin’ you” Mary heartbreak. Now, that’s just the truth!
Today, we found out that she and her husband/manager of 12 years are calling it quits, and I have to say, I was pretty shocked to hear the news. Nobody wants to have to go through a divorce. And I’m praying for my dear sister.
And while I am VERY sad to hear about their breakup, I know that a FIRE Mary album is on the horizon. 2017 is about to be LIT, and women all around the world, who like to sing in the mirror and cry like they’re in the videos, are going to have a very good year.
