Ava Duvernay, Ryan Coogler, Janelle Monae & Others Opt to Visit Flint Over Attending the Oscars

Since the Oscar nominations were announced back in January, the Oscars So White controversy has really taken off. Covered by the La Times, CNN, Fox News, The Hollywood Reporter, etc., the lack of diversity in Hollywood has been an ongoing point of contention. And now, Black actors, producers, singers and filmmakers are taking their talents elsewhere on Oscar night-Flint, Michigan.

Flint, a city that’s been poisoned by its government, (a government who has up until now faced no real consequences) is in dire need of help. Forced to use contaminated water, in a city where people have limited resources, these people are desperate for a solution.

Director Ava Duvernay, along with Ryan Coogler and singer Janelle Monae are just a few of the celebs who are ditching the Oscars to lend a helping hand in Flint.

A free fundraiser will be held by comedian Hannibal Burress and will be broadcasted live via Revolt TV. Ledisi and the oh so fine Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams will also be making an appearance. I wonder who else will show?

We know Jamie Foxx won’t be in attendance, THAT’S for sure.
