Every once in a while, you’ll have the pleasure of meeting someone who’s super talented. Every now and again, you’ll have the opportunity to meet someone else who is extremely passionate. At some point in life, you’ll meet someone who really, truly cares about people and their well-being…and occasionally, you’ll find someone who puts a smile on the face of any and everyone they come into contact with. But it’s rare–very rare that you’ll meet someone who possesses all those qualities and more. Today, that’s why I want to introduce you to Fashion Expert, Shayla Courtney. Thank me later.
Shayla Courtney is a fashion stylist for women who are ready to take their business and life to the next level. Through her one-on-one sessions, group classes, and online courses she’s here to transform your wardrobe and develop your personal style– while helping you find joy along the way.
Her expert style advice has been featured in DOT magazine, Everything Girls Love, LA FIRM Inc, and on the hit TV show Montage. Shayla’s degree in Fashion Merchandising aids in her thorough knowledge and 10+ years of experience in the industry.
When she’s not teaching the fundamentals of style & doing virtual consultations, this Richmond VA native can be found indulging in a great book or on Pinterest (she’s totally addicted…I mean, who isn’t?). Shayla also enjoys spending time with her loving family and volunteering with the non-profit 365Girl Foundation. In short–she’s a busy woman.
I got the chance to sit down and chat with Shayla in between clients. She was nice enough to step away from all the fabrics, shoes and makeup to talk to little ol’ me! We had a really good convo. Here’s what the 29-year-old style maven had to say–
1.Tell me about your passion for fashion. Why are you drawn to it?
I’ve been immersed in the fashion industry since I was a young girl. My mom taught fashion design for 20+ years. Her love for design and creative eye for style inspired me to embrace my own. I love that I can use fashion as a form of expression, make a statement, and inspire women around the world!
2.How’d you start your own company? What led to it?
It was all an accident! I swear! I wanted to be a stylist after being “discovered” by a family friend in college. She liked my style and wanted me to work with her keep her up to date on her style. After working with her for a year I realized — wait people get paid to do this. People do this for living and I will too!
3.What is the hardest part about working for yourself?
The hardest part about working for yourself are the people who view entrepreneurs/small businesses as just “self employed”. They always want the discounts and “hook ups” and it just gets frustrating. It’s rude to ask someone to pay what you think they’re worth. My thought on it is if you can’t afford it don’t ask for it. That’s always hard because you still have to be nice.
4.What is the worst mistake people make when it comes to fashion?
The worst mistake women make is not allowing their style to mature with their age or thinking that they’re too old for something. Fashion has no limits. Anyone can wear any trend. The trick is knowing how to make it work for your body, age, and lifestyle.
5.Talk about some of the exciting things you’ve been able to do since starting your own company/brand
Since my starting my company things have really been amazing. I’ve been the virtual stylist for Dr. Shante Bishop’s DYOB conference, recorded two seasons of Cox cable’s hit TV show Montage, guest styled for CEO magazine, and so much more! I’ve especially loved working with my one on one clients to help women regain their confidence and change their lives!
6.Who’s your dream client?
My dream client is the successful woman. She has a few businesses, works really hard, and needs someone to help her pull it all together. She sees the value in looking great and takes her image seriously. She is a woman on a mission and ready to take her life to the NEXT LEVEL as she takes care of business.
7.What’s the plan in five years?
In the next 5 years I would like to see Montage in national syndication, have built up my company to be a team of stylist, and I have an office downtown somewhere that is luxuriously furnished with a store in the front.
Ahhhh yes, Ms. Shayla. I agree. Every fabulous business woman needs a FABULOUS office space to match her swag! I can only imagine how well dressed it will be!
To keep up with Shayla, and all of her awesome looks, make sure you follow her on social media, and don’t forget to wisit her website!
