Today marks the 14th anniversary of Aaliyah Haughton’s death. And anybody who knows me knows I was a HUGE fan of hers. I still am, really. I was a STAN before I knew what a stan was. Aaliyah gave me LIFE during my young, awkward tween phase, and it’s crazy how even in her death, she still breathes life into me, and so many others that loved her dearly.
You could not PAY me to take my hair from over my left eye! It stayed there for years. All because of Aaliyah. She wore her hair covering her left eye, which was an homage to embattled actress Veronica Lake. Her trademark peek-a-boo hair was worn over her right eye like so:
Aaliyah was everything I wanted to be–beautiful, talented, charming, famous, loved. She was so young. And seemingly so put together.
Though Aaliyah’s career didn’t even last more than a decade, the Princess of R&B won more than 30 awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the 2002 American Music Awards, Best Actress for ‘Queen of the Damned’ at the 2002 BET Awards and Top Hip-Hop/R&B Artist of the Year at the 2000 Billboard Music Awards.
Let’s be honest, Aaliyah had one hell of a team. From Timbaland, to Missy, to Dame Dash (her fiance), to her brother Rashad who wrote a couple of her songs, her crew was solid!
It only made sense that such a talented artist, (who sang “Ave Maria” entirely in Latin in order to get accepted into the Detroit High School of Performing Arts), in collaboration with her crew, would have hit after hit during her career. Now as we reflect on just how awesome Aaliyah was, let’s take a look at 6 of her best videos. Here’s to you Baby Girl.
1. One in a Million
2. Are You That Somebody
3. More Than a Woman
4. Hot Like Fire
5. Back and Forth
6. Rock the Boat
As many of you know, on August 25, 2001, at 6:50 p.m., Aaliyah and several members of the record company boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B (registration N8097W) at the Marsh Harbour Airport in Abaco Islands, The Bahamas, to travel to the Opa-locka Airport in Florida, after they completed filming the music video for “Rock the Boat.” It’s definitely kinda eerie to watch the video knowing what followed. But the video is beautiful nonetheless. Aaliyah will forever be missed by us all!
