If you’ve ever had the privilege of reading Omar Tyree’s classic novel “Flyy Girl” then you’re just excited about this movie adaptation as I am! Word on the street is that the beautiful Sanaa Lathan will be playing the role of Tracy Ellison.
The plot goes a little somethin’ like this: Tracy grew up in Philly, and loved the fast life. She was driven by money, cars and clothes. As an adult, life for her isn’t much different. Grown up Tracy STILL believes that money will solve all of her problems.
The Flyy Girl books are a coming-of-age story that explores the journey of a woman motivated by the material life who plunges into a fast-paced world of gratuitous sex, violence and heartbreak in an attempt to find herself and to assess her goals in life during the hip-hop era. In the midst of her journey, she is forced to reinvent herself and rethink her relationships, her career and definition of success. The novel series has grossed more than $30 million for publisher Simon & Schuster since the first book was published in 2001.
Geoffrey Fletcher, of the movie Precious will write the script.
Lionsgate label Codeblack Films is partnering with Lathan to executive produce the film, along with Dear White People producer Effie Brown.
In short, there’s some talented people behind this.
“So many people have grown up on this series and I’m looking forward to bringing Tracy Ellison’s story to life through film,” Lathan said. “It’s my hope to continue to help bring diverse stories to the big screen.”
I’m excited to see urban stories finally making their way to the silver screen. This is much needed. Although I’m super down for Sanaa playing the role of Tracy, I think I agree with this tweet.
I don't wanna see Sanaa, Gabby, Megan — NONE of them in these. Find some new black actresses & stop making 40 year olds play 17 yr olds.

It would be nice to see some new faces in “Black Hollywood.” Nevertheless, I’m excited for what’s to come.
