Surprise…Surprise! Being a Single Mom is Bad for Your Health

There are over 9 million single mothers in the United States, and I don’t think we really need a news article to tell us that they’re stressed the hell out. Hell, I get stressed just looking at them interact with their little bundles of joy. But apparently, there’s more to to the story. Being a single mom can REALLY impact your health.

According to the Today Show, many single moms suffer from higher risks of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues. And that’s not all. Women who gave birth before the age of 20, have two or more children, have been a single parent for more than 8 years, or became single mothers through divorce tend to be at higher risk.

Geographical factors also come into play. According to Medical News Today, single mothers in the U.S. have it harder.

“Single motherhood is associated with poverty in most societies, but more so in the USA than in Europe,” the authors explain. “This may lead to different mechanisms of selection into lone motherhood between countries. Particularly in Southern European countries, strong social and family networks may offset some negative effects of single motherhood.”

The researchers found that 1 in 3 women from the US surveyed had been a single mother before the age of 50. In comparison, around 1 in 5 women surveyed in England and West European countries, around 4 out of 10 surveyed in Denmark and Sweden and around 1 in 10 women in Southern Europe reported having been a single mother.

I don’t know if you guys know this, but there is a real problem going on in the U.S. Our morale compass is a little off. Why are our numbers so high? Also, why are we one of the two nations with no guaranteed PAID maternity leave for mothers? What kind of monsters are we? Do we not respect moms as much as we SAY we do?

Like the great philosopher and poet, Tupac once said:

“You know it makes me unhappy
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it’s time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don’t we’ll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can’t make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you’re fed up ladies, but you gotta keep your head up”
