Did you know that red lipstick is symbolic for women who consider themselves Feminists? After WWI, suffragettes took to the streets of New York in defiance and to fight for the right to vote. It represents female strength.
Though red lipstick has been looked down upon by many for various reasons, I wear it quite often just because I can…and of course because I’m all about women empowerment. Not only do I like the way red lipstick looks, but I also love how it makes me feel. Back in the day, (and maybe even now) red lipstick was seen as a lip color than only “whores” wore. Obviously, I really hate when people call women “whores” for no reason at all, or simply because they don’t fit into the box they want them to fit in. So I wasn’t feeling THAT reasoning…at all. THEN, rapper ASAP Rocky made a very public statement about how he felt about dark skin women who wore red lipstick:
“But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the complexion. I’m just being for real,” said the Harlem rapper. “You have to be fair skinned to get away with that. Just like if you were to wear like—f—- for instance, what do dark skin girls have that you know fair skinned girls can’t do… Purple lipstick? Naw, that looks stupid on all girls! Purple lipstick, guys! Like, what the f—-…”
ASAP Rocky…STFU. As you probably guessed, this only made me want to wear red lipstick even more. So basically, the moral of the story is, I don’t like being told what I can and cannot wear…especially by men. I also don’t like being generalized. I can’t wear red lipstick because I’ll look like a whore? Yea, OK. *smears red lipstick all over lips & leaves house*
So in my quest to create some solidarity, and of course have a little fun, I asked a bunch of my super cool lady Facebook friends to share a selfie of them in their red lipstick…and you won’t believe all the BEAUTIFULNESS that came my way!
Take a look at these lovely ladies…unafraid to show off their red lips! You GO girls!
