The Chapel Hill Shooting: What color is the face of terror?

Tuesday evening, in the college town of Chapel Hill, NC, three Muslim students were fatally shot, execution style, at their own home.

Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, were the three victims of who we now know as 46 year old Craig Stephen Hicks. Barakat, a second-year dental student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who also happened to be Syrian-American, married Yusor Mohammad in late December. Abu-Salha was a sophomore architecture major at North Carolina State University.

If you haven’t been paying attention, many people are saying that this act of violence was not a hate crime. Some are saying that this was simply a dispute over a parking spot…That the victims’ religion had nothing to do with it.

Robert Maitland, Hicks’ wife’s attorney had this to say:

“It is a simple matter that has nothing to do with the religious faith of the victims,” Maitland said. “It is a mundane issue of this man being frustrated day in and day out, and unfortunately, these victims were there at the wrong time at the wrong place.”

Thanks for clearing that up for us Mr. Maitland. “Wrong place, at the wrong time”…you mean AT HOME?

An excerpt from USA Today:

Hicks has been a full-time paralegal student at Durham Technical Community College. His profile on Facebook reads “Atheists for Equality” and he frequently posted quotes critical of religion.

He was also a Second Amendment advocate. Three weeks ago, he posted a photo of a .38-caliber revolver that he said was loaded and belonged to him. He is license

d to carry a concealed firearm.

Wait. There’s more. They aren’t done telling us just how good of a person this guy is. Hicks was also described as “champion of individual rights in many areas, including race and same-sex marriage, and thinks that everyone is equal.”

Hey guys, remember when Travyon Martin was shot? Eric Garner choked to death? Mike Brown murdered? Didn’t the police and the media go out of their WAY to find out if they had ever gotten an “F” on their report cards, if they’d ever smoked weed, and if their PARENTS were employed?

When people of the Muslim faith KILL people, does this country not report on it every chance they get, and do we NOT go into a state of emergency? Do we NOT refer to them as terrorists? Hmmm…Something is off here…

Think On This:

In the U.S., 87% of mass shooting are committed by Caucasians, ages 13-56. Yet, the killers are never labeled “Terrorists.”

Nope. Never. In this case, we are bombarded with how much of a good person he is. How much he loved equality for all. How much of an advocate he was for people. One post from TalkingPointsMemo.com was even kind enough to tell us that Hicks was “No Mitt Romney Fan.” Thanks for that. The Sandy Hook shootings, the Columbine shootings, the Aurora Theater shootings, the Sikh Temple shootings…I can go on and on. These people are murderers, yet somehow, we always end up sitting through extensive media coverage about how good of a kid they were, how smart they were, and how much they loved kittens. Give  me a f*cking break.

Muslims all over the world have come together via Twitter to voice their hurt, their disgust with the way this story is being told. They’ve coined the hashtag #MuslimLivesMatter, piggybacking off of the popular hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. Again, marginalized groups are  crying out to be heard, demanding that those who aren’t like them view them as human beings, see them as being worthy of life. What a terrible onus to bear.

What does the way we portray white killers in our country say about us? What does it mean? Well, I don’t think I even have to answer that. But I’ll say this: It means that we are FORCING a narrative on people. We are being brainwashed. For a period of time, I couldn’t take a poop without hearing the word “terror.” If I recall, it was when George Dubya was in office. I mean, the Black Panthers were labeled terrorists…Assata Shakur STILL isn’t welcome in the U.S. For a country that loves saying the word “terror” SO much, it’s amazing how it’s never applied to white men in this country. America, the next time you’re looking for terror, it may behoove you to take a look in the mirror.
